LEADERSHIP: NOW OR NEVER
The heinous massacre that has taken place at Bishoftu on October 2, 2016 is cruelty of unparalleled magnitude in Oromo history. When we look at it from the perspectives of Oromo people and those who have lost their lives, the pain we all feel is unbearable. But to understand the past harsh reality, the conquest of Oromo land begun with similar massacres and genocidal acts which since then have continued changing its forms from time to time. One thing has to be clear to all of us. No matter what, our enemies want to remain in total control of Oromo land by erasing from the land all marks defining Oromo characteristics.
What makes Bishoftu Massacre unparalleled and different from the past series of genocidal acts is its unmistakably demonstrating how far our enemy is ready to go in the scale of the mass murder in order to maintain their control over Oromo land and resources. At Bishoftu Massacre, the TPLF armed gangsters have demonstrated how far they can go in utilizing the killing machine at their arsenal. These gangsters have made indiscriminate killing their daily practice with no kind of restraint and accountability. Can we blame God for what is happening to us? All human beings are created equal by God with equal dignity and respect. Our enemies have denied us this inalienable God-given dignity and respect by force. If we allow our enemies to deny us what God has given to us, how can we blame God for that?
Now the question is, how long can we stand this collective suffering and humiliation of unparalleled magnitude? In my view, Bishoftu Massacre has demonstrated unambiguously what our enemy has in store for every one of us. The way out of to end the ongoing collective extermination is to be ready in all possible ways including readiness to pay the ultimate price and get back our freedom and dignity. The massacre perpetrated against our people at Bishoftu has made me feel like committing any act of violence. But I came to realize that this kind of action doesn’t take us anywhere. If we all think that way and act that way, we will simply end up being victims of whatever the enemy is ready do to us. The kind of enemy we are fighting cannot be beaten that way. It is a kind of enemy that can be defeated by being guided with wisdom and with patience.
The TPLF has State resources, institutions and all coercive means at its own disposal which it is mobilizing and effectively using against our people. With the ongoing spontaneous mass protest and direct confrontation defeating a well- organized enemy like the TPLF is impossible. We need strong, dynamic and visionary political leadership which is capable of excelling the TPLF in all its senses. Without inspired and effective leadership, our number and spontaneous protests will take us nowhere. Had it not been for a strong and effective organizational leadership, how would it be possible for a minority TPLF to subdue the entire people of Ethiopia for such a long period?
Considering what has been going on in Oromia for the last 11 months and the ever increasing scale of massacre any Oromo organization or any Oromo for that matter who talk about difference between Oromos for indefinite period of time would certainly serve the interests of our enemy. How can we waste such a long time talking about difference when our common enemy is forcefully engaged in wiping us all as a people? In my view, if they really share the real feeling of Oromo people right now, Oromo organizations don’t spend a single minute talking about differences. On Irreecha day at Bishooftu, by overtly dropping poisonous gas on our people by using helicopters, gunning down many and chasing millions deliberately into a ditch and ultimately causing the Massacre, our enemy has given us clear signal as to what it has in store for us. Now, as things stand, where our very survival as a people is under question, we cannot afford wasting any minute talking about our differences.
Honestly speaking, if Oromo organizations and their leadership are not in a position to resolve their own minor differences within a specific time, how can they claim to lead Oromo people’s struggle against our enemy which is far more difficult? The harsh reality is, whether new or old, an organization capable of leading the ongoing struggle of Oromo people is crucial. If led by an organization, which is capable of preparing a road- map of the struggle, the ongoing Oromo mass protest will surely bring about the end of this arrogant TPLF criminal gangster group. In my view, such an organization can adopt the required tactics and strategy and lead the people along that which should combine non–violent and violent forms of struggle.
I know much of what I have stated so far tend to blame Oromo organizations. But the thing is, much of the characters that are reflected in a certain organization come from the very society from which the organizations have come. This would mean every Oromo should share the blame and work towards bringing about that one organization capable of leading our struggle. Wherever we are, every Oromo should sense the humiliation and torture our people are subjected to in all parts of Oromia. Think of Oromo prisoners in Qilinto prison who have been shot and burnt with fire. Think of our people who are being killed daily by TPLF armed Somali Liyu Police. Think of the massive evictions of Oromo farmers from their land under the guise of development and investment.
